They said it was gone; it would never return. But it will. They said dragons were no longer necessary, and the Weyrs fell to ruin as little more than hold substitutes. But they were wrong. They called those who believed it would return doomsayers and cast them aside, ignored. It was a mistake.
Thread. It would return. A small number of individuals believed and despite their detractors, they formed a secret rebel faction with the goal of creating a Weyr strong enough to stand against the deadly poison that they knew would fall from the skies. Their base of operations was a secluded cluster of islands in the South Sea. It was a Weyr without a name – and without a clutching Gold.
So they stole.
The eggs came from three of the remaining strong Weyrs. Ista. Telgar. Fort. Fourteen eggs were snatched in secret with the hope that one would contain a queen to strengthen their numbers, with the thefts being staged to look like the work of smugglers and pirates – bandits working against the system for profit. Potential candidates were seized from holds in secret – some by their own will, but many simply taken, with the belief that the ends justified the means. Thread would return and they had to be prepared.
Their hopes were not in vain. Thirteen of the stolen eggs hatched on the smoldering rocks in the volcanic ash of Victory Rock, one of the many islands making up the secret Weyr, and among them was a queen. But her hatching was not soon enough. The Red Star rises on the horizon, drawing ever nearer, an omen of danger to come…
… but it’s not the only threat. When pirates sail the seas, with loyalty only to themselves, and your Weyr is an unprotected island chain, where does safety truly lie?
